Brent and I met for the first time in the summer of 2009, when he was playing a softball game in Eastman and I was there with mutual friends. We didn't meet again until October 11, 2009, when those mutual friends set us up on a blind date. We went to La Crosse to Red Lobster and didn't say a whole lot to each other as our friends dominated the conversation. It worked to my advantage though because I got asked on a second date because we didn't get to talk much.
It didn't take long for us to realize we had something special. We spent the spring and summer spending as much time together as possible.
On Oct. 28, 2010 I had spent the day at work and then covering a sporting event at night. It hadn't been a good day. When I got home I was surprised to see Brent had dinner made and Glee on (my favorite show). Normally he made fun of the show the entire time it's on but this time he simply let me watch. After the show ended he suggested we watch another show I enjoy. Afterward we were discussing life matters when he pulled me close and told me he never wanted to lose me. I thought something might be up but didn't read too much into it.
Shortly afterward we decided to go up to bed. While in bed we were discussing our future in vague terms. Brent mentioned that one of his coworkers was asking why he hadn't proposed yet and was giving him a hard time about it. I said that I felt if you're with the person you're meant to be with, you'll have a moment where it becomes clear that this is right. And that you can't force the moment or anticipate it, but that if you truly are meant to be with someone, then you'll know when the moment happens. And Brent said, "well, what if I've already had that moment?" That was when my head went on a fog. We'd discussed this before but never had he said something like that. That was when he looked deep in my eyes and asked me to marry him.
No kidding, I thought he was kidding. I hadn't expected him to propose, let alone propose when he did. He wasn't down on one knee, he didn't have a ring in his hand, nothing. I just sat there in silence trying to decide if he was serious or if this was the meanest joke ever. The first thing out of my mouth, after probably the longest silence in the history of the world, was "are you serious?" That was repeated several times before he finally got out of bed to get the ring to prove to me. Then I switched to "oh my god you're serious." Finally Brent asked if I was going to answer him and that was when I put my arms around him and said yes. |
